In The Evil Ad, we take a look at the various ad campaigns of companies that include Halloween or horror as a theme. These often include commercials, print ads, and their Halloween-themed products.
In 1999, Barq’s picked a curious media tie-in to feature on their soda cans. Notable for their rather unchanging can imagery, the company decided to celebrate Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s third season with a variety of Buffy-inspired artwork, highlighting each of the main characters with fetishistic aplomb. The four cans featured either Buffy, Xander, Giles, or Oz and Willow (since this was before her lesbian phase).
Surprisingly, Barq’s did not opt to fill the cans with blood but their usual formula of delicious, biting root beer. It’s not the first time they’ve done a media tie-in, either: they also featured Bart Simpson in 2000.
I think I speak for everyone when I say that we’re all still waiting for the Angel and Charmed line of Barq’s cans, though.
