These two commercials for Redd’s Wicked Apple Ale aired last Halloween, but since I haven’t been able to catch any new Halloween commercials this year (besides the Instagram Honda one I brought attention to last time), these will have to hold us over until we get some official one ones this year.
I’m not a fan of Redd’s Apple Ale, I’ll put that out right now. This isn’t a clever attempt to sell more product for the company; they’re not paying me for this spot. I do, however, like both of these spots because of their traditional Halloween ideas.
For this first one, we’ve got the generic costumes of Halloween – vampire, werewolf, witch – at a festive Halloween party. The theme is a situation we’ve all gone through: what kind of drink do I want? Do I want something heavy, like a Bloody Mary? Or do I want to go the beer route, and have a few more of those instead of pounding liquor? Redd’s play on that idea is fairly clever, with Redd’s Wicked Apple Ale blasting all other competitors away.
The second one also has a traditional mummy, but what I find clever about this commercial is that it’s the same event that’s happening directly behind the first ad. If you look closely, you can see the head on the wall and the mummy’s bandages behind the vampire. I like how this captures the realism of the party scene, continuing the idea across two different commercials.
